When I think of authentic learning experiences, I automatically think of a month-long project I did with my students centered around the Global Cardboard Challenge. This global campaign was inspired by a film called Caine’s Arcade. Caine’s story took place in his father’s auto mechanic shop. He used carboard and items he found around the shop to create an arcade for customers. This inspired a film maker, Nirvan Mullick, to share his story and the rest is history! I shared Caine’s story with my students and asked them to imagine and create their own arcade for the younger students in our school. After days of dreaming, designing, creating prototypes, and finally finished products, they were ready to share their designs and allow students to play the games. Throughout this process students learned how to build with cardboard and carry out designs. They learned what worked and what didn’t. The enthusiasm for this project was palpable. Students couldn’t wait to share with an authentic audience. Every student met the end goal of creating a cardboard arcade game, yet all had unique projects inspired by their own imaginations. This project is one I will never forget and hope my students will not either!
