Creating authentic learning opportunities requires the teacher to think first of the student and then of the desired learning objective. It requires the teacher to ask broader questions and propose real-world problems for students to solve. Doing so means the learner will engage in a more authentic learning experience. They may learn the same skills as their peers along the way but will have outcomes that look very different. Focusing on authentic learning outcomes provide educators the opportunity to shift from teaching the standards to creating opportunities for students to engage in more meaningful learning.
How to create authentic learning opportunities:
Consider student's interests
Propose a real-world problem.
State the desired outcome.
Allow students to work on a solution. This can look different for each learner.
Reflect on the learning process.
Share with an authentic audience.
The COVA model allows students Choice, Ownership, Voice and the opportunity to engage in Authentic learning experiences which will benefit them throughout their life.
